President Donald Trump described the Lindsay Clancy case as a “horrible tragedy” after a Massachusetts judge declared a mistrial because jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict. Asked whether he had followed the trial, Trump said it had been shown on television so often that it was difficult not to.

Trump avoided taking a definitive position on the outcome. “She did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse,” he said. He added that there would be a price to pay, suggesting the possible outcomes included a mental institution or prison.

Clancy has admitted killing her three children at their home in Duxbury in early 2023, but pleaded not guilty. Her lawyers argued that she should not be held criminally responsible because she had been overmedicated and was suffering from postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors charged her with first-degree murder.

The trial featured testimony from numerous psychologists and psychiatrists about Clancy’s state of mind. Jurors deliberated for 36 hours and repeatedly told the judge they could not reach agreement. The judge declared a mistrial on Friday after the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court declined to intervene in a dispute over whether one juror had ignored court instructions. Local prosecutors have not said whether they will seek a new trial.
