Trump claims Iran to hand over enriched uranium for destruction, calls for expanded Abraham Accords

Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Iran will "immediately" surrender its enriched uranium reserves for repatriation and destruction, or accept their coordinated elimination under the supervision of the Atomic Energy Commission. Trump stated on his Truth Social account that the "enriched uranium (nuclear powder!) will be immediately delivered to the United States for repatriation and destruction or, preferably, in coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in situ or elsewhere acceptable, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, as a witness to this process."

Earlier, Trump had asserted that any agreement to end the conflict with Iran should mandate the inclusion of additional countries, such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, in the Abraham Accords. These U.S.-brokered pacts aim to normalize relations with Israel. Trump indicated that negotiations with Iran are "moving along well" but linked any potential agreement to an expansion of participation in the 2020 agreements.

Trump specifically called for Saudi Arabia and Qatar to join "immediately," along with Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan. Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates were the first to join in 2020. Trump emphasized that after the extensive efforts by the United States to assemble this complex puzzle, it should be obligatory for all these countries to adhere to the Abraham Accords simultaneously.

The immediate focus of negotiations reportedly involves the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for global hydrocarbon trade. According to The Washington Post, citing an Iranian official, the opening of the strait would be gradual. In the initial phase, the U.S. would release $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets, initiate demining operations in the strait, and lift the U.S. blockade. However, U.S. government officials are reportedly more cautious in their assessment.

After all the work done by the United States to try to put this very complex puzzle together, it should be mandatory that all these countries, as a minimum, simultaneously, adhere to the Abraham Accords.
