Trump claims Walmart price cuts were at his request for U.S. anniversary

Walmart has confirmed price reductions on a range of consumer goods, including ground beef, a staple for summer barbecues. The announcement followed a claim by former President Donald Trump that his administration had requested the price cuts to mark the United States' 250th anniversary.

Trump, speaking on Truth Social, celebrated the move, stating Walmart would significantly lower prices for American consumers. He specifically mentioned that the price of a pound of ground beef would decrease by "almost 15%." Trump urged other retailers to follow Walmart's example, calling them "true patriots."

While Trump cited a 15% reduction, Walmart's actual discount on ground beef was closer to 12%. According to Reuters, the price for a pound of 73% lean ground beef dropped from $6.74 to $5.94. The retailer also lowered prices on other items popular for summer gatherings, such as fresh corn and cherries. Everyday items like disposable plates also received discounts.

Significant price drops were also applied to multi-packs of Coca-Cola products, with 24-unit cases falling from $14.97 to $9.97. Similar reductions were made for Pepsi products. These price adjustments come as the U.S. beef market has experienced historically high prices in recent months, attributed by experts to factors like drought impacting grazing lands and increasing feed costs.
