A public rift has emerged between former President Donald Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott over the governor's decision to pause new data center projects seeking to connect to the state's power grid. Trump publicly rebuked Abbott, calling the pause a mistake and emphasizing the substantial economic potential of the data center industry, suggesting it could even surpass oil in economic weight.

In an interview, Trump warned that Texas risks losing these significant investments to other states if it restricts their development. This criticism follows Abbott's August 3rd directive to the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to review all pending data center interconnection requests. The governor's office stated that ERCOT was reviewing applications for over 474 gigawatts of new electrical demand, a figure that dwarfs the grid's peak demand and is largely driven by data centers. Companies must also demonstrate efforts to reduce their reliance on the state grid and minimize community impact.
