Trump coin enters circulation as critics accuse president of cultivating a personality cult

Donald Trump’s self-styled personality cult now has a coin to match. The U.S. Mint has begun putting into circulation a piece bearing the U.S. president’s face, and the mint is encouraging people to look for it in their change.

The coin marks the 250th anniversary of the United States. A roll of 25 Trump dollars costs $61, while a bag of 100 sells for $154.50, according to official information.

Trump appears on the front with a stern expression beneath the words “Liberty” and “In God We Trust.” The years 1776 and 2026 appear along the lower edge. The reverse carries the Great Seal of the United States, showing the bald eagle and the motto “E pluribus unum.”

No living U.S. president had previously appeared on a coin. Critics say the issue reflects the personality cult surrounding the 80-year-old president, which they compare with practices associated with authoritarian systems such as China and North Korea. The coin also sidesteps a congressional rule dating back 160 years that bars images of living presidents on coins and banknotes.

Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has also had buildings named after him, while huge banners bearing his likeness have appeared at numerous Washington departments. Palm Beach airport in Florida has likewise been renamed after him.
