Trump confirms envoys will travel to Moscow and Kyiv to revive peace talks

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to carry a White House proposal to Moscow and Kyiv in an effort to reopen peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Donald Trump confirmed the mission from the White House and said the proposal was intended to end the war.

The official itinerary called for the two envoys to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow before travelling to Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It would be their first direct meeting with Zelenskyy, according to the report.

Trump defended his administration’s record in resolving international disputes and said, “They are carrying a proposal to end the war. Because I ended eight wars.” He also recalled that he had not received the Nobel Peace Prize despite his efforts to end conflicts.

The president acknowledged that the Ukraine war had proved harder to resolve than he expected. He attributed part of the difficulty to the deteriorated relationship between Putin and Zelenskyy, saying they “deeply hate each other.”

Citing sources familiar with the discussions, The New York Times reported that U.S. diplomats had spent weeks trying to arrange a temporary halt in military operations while the envoys were in the region. The diplomatic effort came as Ukrainian forces attacked Russian energy infrastructure and Kyiv asked Washington to replenish its air-defense ammunition.
