Trump denies pressuring Canada on French use; separatist sentiment in Quebec cools

A trade dispute between the United States and Canada has unexpectedly become entangled with linguistic and cultural issues, specifically concerning the use of French in Canada and the separatist movement in Quebec.

U.S. President Donald Trump took to social media platform Truth Social to refute claims that trade talks had faltered over Canada's French language requirements. "I will never interfere with Canadians speaking French! In fact, I have never even thought of such a stupid thing," Trump posted, dismissing the assertion as a fabrication by a "weak and incompetent Prime Minister" seeking to regain lost political support. He added, "I love French Canadians!"

This clarification came after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested that the U.S. had made "threats regarding the French language," which he characterized as an unacceptable infringement on Quebec and Canada's cultural sovereignty. The U.S. has reportedly pressured Canada to withdraw a new law requiring streaming services to prioritize French-language content for the Quebec region.
