Trump denies U.S. running low on some munitions, says many more on the way

President Trump on Thursday challenged recent reports indicating significant U.S. munitions shortages amid the war with Iran. He asserted on his Truth Social platform that the United States possesses "massive amounts" of munitions, with more being produced and delivered.

"The 'leakers' of these treasonous statements are being hunted down. Long term jail sentences will be sought!" Trump declared, referencing statements he deemed disloyal.

These comments contrast with reporting from CBS News, which cited two sources with direct knowledge stating the U.S. has depleted nearly all its global stockpile of long-range precision missiles. The Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and Precision Strike Missiles are reportedly almost entirely used up. Reuters first reported the extensive use of these long-range precision missiles during Operation Epic Fury.

Concerns have also been raised about dwindling stockpiles of defensive interceptors, specifically Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) systems. A report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimated that U.S. Patriot interceptors have fallen from 2,330 before the war to between 759 and 827 by late July. THAAD interceptors have similarly decreased from 452 to a range of 234 to 278. The same report suggests it could take until mid-2029 to replenish these inventories to pre-war levels.

Despite these reports, Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that "America's military is the most powerful in the world and has everything it needs." He added that the U.S. military maintains a "deep arsenal of capabilities to protect our people and our interests."

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth previously dismissed similar concerns, calling them a "manufactured story" and asserting that U.S. stockpiles are "great, and they're only getting stronger."
