Trump envoys meet Zelenskyy in bid to revive peace negotiations

Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrived in Kyiv on Sunday, hours after meeting Vladimir Putin in Moscow, in an effort to give new momentum to talks aimed at ending the conflict. Their visit came as missile and drone attacks by both sides increased.

It was the first visit to the Ukrainian capital by both envoys since Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025. Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally received them at Kyiv’s railway station, accompanied by Ukraine’s negotiating team.

In a message on Telegram, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready for a “constructive” conversation. “We are interested in bringing the end of the war closer,” he wrote. “Security guarantees are needed. A dignified postwar peace is needed. It is important to work in a coordinated, substantive and realistic manner.”

Putin and Zelenskyy both ordered attacks against Moscow and Kyiv suspended until Monday because of the American envoys’ presence. Putin had received Kushner and Witkoff in Moscow on Saturday and praised the American president’s leadership.
