Trump envoys push Gaza peace plan amid Israeli objections

U.S. envoys met with mediators in Cairo on Sunday, seeking to advance a peace plan for Gaza. The plan, proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, calls for an immediate cessation of military operations in the enclave, disarmament of Hamas, and withdrawal of Israeli troops. It also envisions Gaza's reconstruction under a new Palestinian civilian administration.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, has previously described Trump's latest peace plan as "unacceptable." Israel is reportedly concerned about U.S. demands to halt targeted assassinations of Hamas militants while the group rebuilds its forces.

The diplomatic efforts come as Israel continues its airstrikes in Gaza. The Israeli military stated that its aircraft struck two militants from Islamic Jihad and Hamas in Khan Younis and Nuseirat on Sunday. At least five Palestinians were injured in an attack on a tent camp, with one later dying from his wounds. Another airstrike in the Nuseirat refugee camp injured several people.

Hamas leadership has engaged in discussions with Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad in Cairo. A Hamas spokesperson indicated that the group would inform mediators about alleged Israeli violations of a ceasefire. Trump had previously announced significant progress on his plan, with both Israel and Hamas reportedly agreeing to it in principle. Hamas stated its agreement was to avoid a renewed war, but emphasized that implementation depended on Israel fulfilling its obligations, including troop withdrawal and halting attacks. A ceasefire in November halted major fighting in the two-year war that began with Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, but has not fully stopped Israeli actions.
