Trump floats renaming the Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait”

President Donald Trump has suggested putting his name on the Strait of Hormuz, a move he presented as a reflection of what he said was U.S. control over the vital waterway.

“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The White House later posted a map of the Gulf with the strait labeled “Trump Strait,” adding: “It’s got a nice ring to it.”

The proposal came while the six-month war with Iran showed no sign of ending. Trump said U.S. forces had launched fresh strikes near the strait after new Iranian minelaying efforts. Iran said one of those strikes killed four people at a wedding and called it a war crime. Tehran then launched retaliatory attacks against U.S. bases in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and Iraq.

Trump has floated or enacted several other geographic name changes since returning to office. These include renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, restoring the name Mount McKinley for Denali and proposing other changes involving institutions and government programs. Mexico and Canada have not accepted the changes to the waterways.

The Strait of Hormuz proposal also emerged as the war pushed oil prices higher for U.S. consumers ahead of November’s midterm elections. Iran has effectively shut the chokepoint, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil passes.
