Trump halts Iran attacks, citing potential deal for Strait of Hormuz opening

Former US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the United States and Israel have agreed to pause new attacks against Iran, contingent on the rapid finalization of a deal to end the ongoing conflict.

Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that Iran and other Middle Eastern nations requested the halt, claiming "the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to." He indicated that the deal would involve the "Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat." Trump added, "The Country of Israel joins me in this commitment. Get to work, everybody, and get it DONE."

Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL.

Tehran has not yet confirmed Trump's statement. The region has been on edge, with fears of escalation following previous threats of renewed heavy attacks between Washington and Tehran, particularly targeting energy infrastructure. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy supplies, remains shut, and shipping in the Red Sea is also disrupted by Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

However, the US news website Axios reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) spoke with Trump on Saturday, expressing concern over planned attacks and urging de-escalation. Meanwhile, the article notes a significant issue for Washington: depleting munitions stocks, particularly Patriot anti-missile interceptors, with estimates suggesting US inventories have fallen sharply since the conflict began.
