Trump: ICE will not stop traffic interceptions despite fatal shootings

President Donald Trump has declared that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will continue its traffic interception operations, rejecting calls to halt the practice following recent fatal shootings. The agency had previously announced a temporary suspension of nationwide traffic stops.

The temporary halt came after ICE officers fatally shot two men during separate interception missions in Texas and Maine within the past week. These incidents have sparked public outcry and raised questions about the use of force by ICE officers, particularly concerning the lack of body cameras.

This is not a policy change, but a temporary stop. This will be a short-term review to ensure the safety of immigration and customs enforcement agents and to determine if they are doing the right thing.

While the Department of Homeland Security classified both deceased individuals as "illegal immigrants," it admitted that neither man was the primary target of the initial arrest operations. Authorities have yet to present evidence suggesting that either man posed a threat to agents or the public, which would justify the use of lethal force.

ICE had ordered its officers to suspend most vehicle interdiction activities nationwide as part of a review. Tom Homan, U.S. Border Patrol's former acting director, described the pause as a "short-term review" to ensure agent safety and proper procedures. However, Trump asserted on his social media platform, Truth Social, that ICE's performance has significantly reduced crime rates and vowed that traffic interceptions would not cease.
