Trump kicks off Freedom 250 IndyCar race in Washington, D.C.

President Trump and first lady Melania Trump officially launched the Freedom 250 Grand Prix IndyCar race on the streets of Washington, D.C. The event began with a ceremonial slow lap around the course, followed by the president waving the green flag to signal the start of the race as drivers sped through the capital's downtown, including a section along Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House.

The open-wheel race is one of several celebrations planned this year to commemorate America's 250th birthday. Pre-race festivities included a performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" by tenor Christopher Macchio and a military aircraft flyover featuring a B-2 stealth bomber and the Qatar-gifted Air Force One, escorted by fighter jets.

President Trump, in his second term, has increasingly focused on the ceremonial aspects of the presidency, including attending sporting events. He recently presented the trophy at the World Cup final. IndyCar series owner Roger Penske, a long-time friend of Trump's, played a key role in bringing the race to Washington. Trump recounted that Penske had sought to bring the race to the city for 20 years, but it was arranged quickly after Penske met with him.
