Trump lauds Armenia PM's 'decisive' election win in face of Russian pressure

President Donald Trump congratulated Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday for his Civil Contract party's "decisive victory" in weekend elections. Pashinyan's party secured 49.8% of the votes, enough for a parliamentary majority. This win occurred despite international election observers noting blatant interference by Russia. Trump expressed strong support, writing on social media, "I was very proud to have Endorsed him for Re-Election, and have no doubt that, with him as the Leader of the beautiful Country of Armenia, it will attain levels of Greatness and Success beyond everyone's wildest expectations!" Pashinyan's re-election comes as Russia intensifies pressure on the South Caucasus nation. Pashinyan, who has led Armenia since 2018, has pursued closer ties with the European Union and Washington. Russia, a long-standing military ally of Armenia, has imposed trade restrictions and accused the West of interfering in the vote. Armenia's opposition also alleged election violations. Russia has urged Armenia to quickly settle its participation in a military alliance of former Soviet states and a separate economic bloc. Russian agriculture watchdog chief Sergei Dankvert stated that Russia has shifted trout sourcing to Iran and Turkey, according to TASS news agency, after asking Armenia to suspend certification for the Russian market for all but two Armenian fish exporters.
