Trump: 'Mistake' to Replace FIFA President Infantino

U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly defended FIFA President Gianni Infantino, describing him as "fantastic" and warning that replacing him would be a "terrible mistake."

Trump made the remarks on Truth Social, asserting that Infantino has led the most successful World Cup ever, which was four times more successful than previous tournaments. He warned that without Infantino, the World Cup would never be as successful or profitable again.

Infantino has recently faced significant criticism. This includes a controversial proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup to investors, a move that reportedly involved Joshua Kushner, the brother of Trump's son-in-law. Additionally, The Telegraph reported allegations that Infantino paid off a woman with whom he had an affair during his time as UEFA secretary-general.

Despite Trump's endorsement, Infantino's re-election is not supported by a significant number of football associations, including the Swedish Football Association.

Trump and Infantino were seen together distributing the World Cup trophy a few weeks prior. Trump has previously received FIFA's "Peace Prize," being the sole recipient to date.
