Trump names housing finance chief as acting intelligence director, sparking expertise concerns

President Donald Trump has appointed Bill Pue, the current director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), as the acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI). The announcement was made via Trump's social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump praised Pue's extensive experience in managing market safety and soundness, highlighting that the assets under his leadership at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac exceed $10 trillion, a significant increase over the past year. Pue will concurrently hold his position as FHFA director and chairman of the boards of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while serving as acting DNI.

However, the appointment has sparked controversy, with critics questioning Pue's qualifications for the top intelligence role. Pue's background is primarily in business, having led a real estate investment firm. He lacks direct experience in national security or intelligence matters. The Associated Press noted that Pue's expertise in national security remains unclear, though he has frequently traveled with Trump on Air Force One to the president's Mar-a-Lago residence.

Pue has also been a vocal supporter of Trump, often attacking political opponents. He previously criticized former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for not lowering interest rates aggressively enough. The Director of National Intelligence oversees and coordinates the activities of all 18 U.S. intelligence agencies, including the CIA, FBI, and NSA.

Pue's predecessor, Joseph Maguire, is expected to step down at the end of June after disclosing his husband's cancer diagnosis. For Pue to be formally nominated as DNI, he would require Senate confirmation.
