Trump Orders Review of Child Vaccine Schedule, Favors Separate Doses

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at revising childhood vaccination schedules, reflecting his long-held belief that vaccines should be administered during separate medical visits. The order specifically calls for separating the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three distinct injections, to be given at different appointments. The White House stated the order also directs the health department to enhance immunization research.

However, the proposed separation of the MMR vaccine into individual shots is not currently available in the United States. Trump indicated that one-year-olds should receive their vaccines across five separate visits, though it remained unclear if this applied to all vaccinations or specific ones.

Public health experts have voiced significant concerns about Trump's proposal. They worry that spacing out vaccinations, as suggested, could leave children vulnerable to preventable diseases before they receive all necessary doses. Health officials emphasize that current childhood vaccine schedules are based on rigorous studies and ongoing safety monitoring.

While the executive order requests a review of vaccination recommendations, the authority to mandate school vaccinations rests with individual states, not the federal government. The order will advise states with existing school vaccination mandates to consider updating their laws to align with the federal recommendations. This move follows a previous directive in December for the Department of Health and Human Services to review international vaccination guidelines, a review that had previously led to a reduction in recommended vaccines, a measure later blocked by courts.
