Trump Posts Image Suggesting New Mexico Should Be Renamed “New America”

Donald Trump’s latest post appeared to suggest renaming the U.S. state of New Mexico “New America.” The image showed the outline of the state with “Mexico” crossed out and replaced by “America.” The White House also shared the image on X.

The post contained no explanation. CNN reported that the White House had not announced any process for renaming the state. While the president has authority to change the names of geographic features, he cannot legally rename a state on his own. Such a change would have to be carried out within the state itself.

Trump has already pursued other geographic name changes during his current term. He renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” and recently called for Lake Ontario to be renamed “Lake America.” New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham accused him of trying to distract Americans.
