Trump Posts Photo With Kim Jong Un, Says 'We Are on Good Terms'

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited speculation about potential dialogue with North Korea by posting a photograph of himself with leader Kim Jong Un from their 2019 meeting at the Panmunjom Joint Security Area. The image was shared on Trump's social media platform, Truth Social.

Accompanying the photo, Trump wrote, "We don't look good in this specific photo, but we have many photos where we are laughing. Kim Jong Un and I are on good terms." This statement, while acknowledging the specific image's tone, emphasizes a perceived positive personal relationship with the North Korean leader.

The Panmunjom meeting in June 2019 was the third encounter between the two leaders, following summits in Singapore in 2018 and Hanoi in 2019. During the Panmunjom meeting, Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to cross the Military Demarcation Line into North Korea. The leaders held a roughly 50-minute meeting at the Freedom House on the South Korean side, with then-South Korean President Moon Jae-in also present.

This is not the first time Trump has shared past summit photos. In June, he posted images from the Singapore summit. Analysts suggest that Trump's repeated highlighting of these past diplomatic engagements with Kim Jong Un signals a potential openness to resuming high-level talks. Some U.S. think tanks have speculated about the possibility of a North Korea-U.S. summit after the U.S. midterm elections in November, with Kim Jong Un potentially aiming to reaffirm the basic principles of the Singapore joint statement.
