Trump praised Tinubu’s resolve, not anti-terrorism achievement, says APM

The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has accused the Nigerian government of misleading the public by portraying a letter from former U.S. President Donald Trump as an endorsement of President Bola Tinubu's performance in combating terrorism. The APM contends that Trump's correspondence merely acknowledged Tinubu's determination and commitment to addressing insecurity, rather than praising concrete achievements.

The Allied People’s Movement condemns the attempt by the Tinubu Presidency to mislead Nigerians by claiming that United States President Donald Trump lauded President Bola Tinubu for his actions in tackling terrorism.

APM National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, challenged the Presidency to identify any part of Trump's letter that commends Tinubu for tangible results in the fight against terrorism. The Presidency had announced that Trump wrote to Tinubu, commending his administration's security efforts and mentioning the deployment of U.S. Special Operations Forces to train the Nigerian military. However, the APM described this interpretation as an attempt to create a false impression of the country's security situation.

We insist that President Trump merely responded to a letter from the Nigerian leader and acknowledged his stated commitment to fighting terrorism.

"The Allied People’s Movement condemns the attempt by the Tinubu Presidency to mislead Nigerians by claiming that United States President Donald Trump lauded President Bola Tinubu for his actions in tackling terrorism," the party stated. "We insist that President Trump merely responded to a letter from the Nigerian leader and acknowledged his stated commitment to fighting terrorism."

It is highly reprehensible that the Tinubu Presidency brazenly distorted the content and context of a letter from the President of the United States in a bid to launder the battered image of the Bola Tinubu administration and create the impression that the American President endorsed an administration that has woefully failed in the fight against terrorism.

The APM further criticized the Presidency for distorting the letter's content to "launder the battered image of the Bola Tinubu administration." Citing a portion of Trump's July 6, 2026 letter, the APM highlighted that Trump wrote: "Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people. I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities…" The party emphasized that the letter speaks of resolve and commitment, not specific achievements against terrorists.
