President Donald Trump will return to the White House Correspondents' Dinner this Friday, three months after an attempted assassination led to the chaotic evacuation and cancellation of the event. The rescheduled gala now features significantly reinforced security protocols and a change of venue from the Washington Hilton to the smaller Waldorf Astoria, a former Trump hotel. This move aims to ensure the event proceeds without incident. Trump is expected to deliver the speech he was unable to give in April, following the shooting at the original venue. Cole Allen, 31, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the attempted assassination. The Secret Service has implemented extensive security measures, closing off a large area of Washington. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump will "celebrate freedom of speech and the First Amendment" and looks forward to "finishing what he started." Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents' Association, emphasized that the event would not be deterred by violence. Trump himself had previously called the decision to proceed with the dinner a "sign of strength and resilience." The April dinner would have been Trump's first with the correspondents covering his presidency, reflecting his often contentious relationship with the media, whom he has labeled "enemies of the people." The rescheduled event will also include a performance by mentalist Oz Pearlman and a tribute to a Secret Service agent and Hilton staff who responded to the April incident.
