Todd Blanche, Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, has moved a significant step closer to Senate confirmation as Attorney General. His path to the position, currently held on an interim basis, was cleared after two Republican senators agreed to support his nomination.

Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina had previously opposed Blanche's confirmation. Their resistance stemmed from concerns about Blanche's suitability and independence, particularly regarding a proposed $1.8 billion compensation fund. This fund was intended to provide financial restitution to individuals and allies of Trump, including those involved in the January 2021 Capitol riot.

Blanche has now provided written guarantees from the Justice Department. One letter confirms the administration's definitive decision to forgo the creation of the controversial compensation fund. Another document clarifies an agreement designed to shield Trump from potential prosecution for tax offenses. These assurances appear to have satisfied Cornyn and Tillis, who announced they would vote in favor of Blanche's nomination.

While Blanche still needs confirmation from the full Senate, the withdrawal of opposition from key Republican figures significantly improves his chances. The need for written guarantees represents a success for senators like Cornyn and Tillis, who had previously faced political pressure from Trump.
