Trump's moves raise fears of emergency declaration to control elections

U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration are fueling concerns about the integrity of American elections through a series of actions this summer. These moves have heightened expectations that Trump might seek greater control over the electoral process, potentially by declaring a national state of emergency. The White House and federal agencies have released documents, including controversial analyses of alleged non-citizen voting and historical intelligence memos, which critics say are laying the groundwork for such a move.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that U.S. elections are vulnerable to foreign interference and falsely stated that the 2020 election, which he lost to Joe Biden, was stolen. He has not dismissed the idea of declaring a state of emergency for elections when asked by right-wing hosts. "Let's just say stranger things have happened, okay? Aria Branch, an attorney with Elias Law Group, suggests the administration is "trying to lay the groundwork for declaring some kind of emergency situation to nationalize elections." She believes the president is "looking for every opportunity to do so." Santiago Mayer, president of the Gen Z organization Voters of Tomorrow, stated, "It's pretty obvious that this man is losing touch with reality, so we have to prepare for anything." His organization is preparing for all eventualities, focusing on ensuring enough voters turn out to thwart any attempts to manipulate the outcome.

Democratic members of Congress have been simulating responses to possible executive provocations, including AI-driven disinformation campaigns and the deployment of ICE agents to polling stations. Advanced democracy organizations are also preparing. Former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard's participation in an FBI search in Georgia and her testimony about investigating foreign election interference have also drawn attention. Following her departure, Trump temporarily appointed longtime ally Bill Pulte, a move criticized for his lack of intelligence experience.
