Trump says new Air Force One will get security upgrades

President Donald Trump stated Sunday that his new Air Force One, a luxury jet gifted by Qatar, will be sent for defensive upgrades. "They're going to be sending it, and they'll have it be maxed out. It'll take about a month," Trump told reporters after attending the World Cup final in New Jersey.

The president has flown on the new plane several times since its June debut. However, he used the older aircraft for part of his return journey from Turkey earlier this month. Trump explained at the time that the new jet was sent ahead to allow U.S. service members in England to tour it.

But sources familiar with the matter told CBS News that the Secret Service requested the swap. They cited concerns that the new plane was not yet equipped with the security systems of the original aircraft. The older planes feature technology to blind missiles and misdirect munitions, according to sources.

Trump did not specify the nature of the planned upgrades but acknowledged for the first time that the new plane lacks some capabilities of the previous one. Qatar's royal family gifted the jet last year, drawing criticism from lawmakers over security and ethical concerns.
