Donald Trump says the renewed US attacks on Iran will not continue for very long, but he offered no clear timetable for the fighting. Asked at the White House how long the strikes would last, the US president said he did not know how much longer Iran could endure, adding that the duration did not matter to him.

The US military carried out its second strike in three days against Iran, targeting radar systems and mine-laying capabilities on the country’s southern coast. Iran responded with drone and missile attacks on US military bases across the Middle East.

Trump said the United States had destroyed all the new defensive and offensive equipment Iran had tried to build along the Strait of Hormuz. He called the previous night’s attack very strong and said US forces were ready to launch further strikes whenever he wanted.

Oil prices had risen to $95 a barrel, but Trump said prices would fall. He avoided directly answering questions about what the United States was targeting and why the attacks were necessary, instead claiming that Washington had very strong control over the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest escalation followed the breakdown of roughly a month of calm between the two countries. The confrontation began after the United States struck Iran’s Larak Island on Aug. 30, saying it had targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel preparing to place sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran then attacked US bases, including a base in Jordan, with missiles and drones.
