‘Trump Strait’? US president thinks Hormuz could use a rebrand

Donald Trump has suggested giving the Strait of Hormuz a new name: “Trump Strait.”

The U.S. president made the proposal Wednesday on Truth Social, writing: "Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be 'hotter' than ever before!"

The remark is the latest geographical renaming idea floated by Trump. A week earlier, he ordered Lake Ontario renamed “Lake America” amid a trade dispute with Canada. On his first day back in office in January 2025, he renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” Neither Mexico nor Canada has accepted those changes.

Some of Trump’s previous renaming proposals began as apparently jovial comments before he later implemented them. He has also repeatedly threatened in recent weeks to claim sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, including by posting a map labeling the waterway as a new U.S. territory.

The strait remains contested during the war with Iran. Iran has effectively shut the chokepoint, through which a fifth of the world’s oil passes, in retaliation for the war Trump started with Israel in late February, according to the report. Oil prices rose again after U.S. forces launched fresh strikes near the strait on Tuesday in response to what Trump described as new Iranian minelaying efforts.
