Trump taps Lance Schroyer to lead ICE, deepen deportations

Donald Trump has nominated Lance Schroyer, a veteran with over 29 years of public service, to lead the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Schroyer, an ex-Marine from Oklahoma, replaces David Venturella, who had been acting director after Todd Lyons' departure.

Schroyer's appointment signals a deepening of the current administration's strategy to intensify immigration enforcement and expedite the deportation of undocumented immigrants. He currently serves as a senior advisor to the Secretary of Homeland Security, focusing on coordinating immigration control policies and inter-agency cooperation.

The nomination, announced by Trump on June 27, highlights Schroyer's operational experience in security and law enforcement. "He possesses direct operational experience in security and law enforcement tasks," Trump stated. The appointment still requires confirmation from the U.S. Senate.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin emphasized Schroyer's pivotal role in the administration's goal to identify, arrest, and deport individuals residing in the U.S. without authorization, particularly those deemed priorities by federal authorities. Before joining DHS, Schroyer held a major position in the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, leading the Emergency Services Unit. His background includes supervising teams for missing child searches, disaster response, dignitary protection, threat assessment, and immigration law enforcement.

Schroyer's experience also includes work under the 287(g) program, which allows for collaboration between local and federal authorities on immigration enforcement. The DHS noted his involvement in coordinating operations with state, local, and federal agencies to locate and detain individuals.
