Trump Threatens EU With Tariffs, Launches Trade Probe Over Tech Fines

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a trade investigation into the European Union, vowing to impose "significant tariffs" in the near future. Trump cited the EU's recent penalties against large American technology firms as the reason for this retaliatory action, labeling the practice as "unlawful and highly discriminatory."

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump detailed the fines imposed on companies like Apple ($15 billion), Meta ($3 billion), Amazon ($2.5 billion), and most recently, Google ($1 billion). He asserted that these actions, which he claims occurred "without any explanation," began at high levels during the first year of the Biden administration and declared they would not continue under his leadership.

"The United States is not a piggy bank for Europe, nor will we be," Trump stated. He added that an investigation into the "robbery" of American companies and taxpayers would commence immediately. Trump promised that the EU would pay a "very big price" for its "unlawful and very unethical behavior," and that the penalties would be completely nullified.

The European Commission had fined Google approximately 890 million euros for favoring its own services in search results over competing platforms. Trump's announcement signals a potential escalation of trade tensions between the U.S. and the EU, reflecting his administration's protectionist stance.
