Trump to skip 9/11 anniversary ceremony at Ground Zero, citing speech ban

Donald Trump will not attend the 25th anniversary commemoration of the September 11 attacks at Ground Zero, a notable absence for a sitting president on such a significant historical date. This marks the first time a president has skipped the ceremony at the site where the Twin Towers once stood during a milestone anniversary.

According to the New York Times, Trump's decision stems from the National September 11 Memorial and Museum's refusal to allow him to deliver a speech. The memorial has maintained a policy since 2012 that prohibits politicians from speaking during the commemorations, aiming to keep the solemn occasion free from political discourse and focus solely on remembrance.

While politicians previously read historical documents or poems, the current format involves listening to victims' families read the names of the deceased. Trump's attendance at the World Trade Center had been on his schedule until mid-August, with security and staff conducting site surveys. However, the program changed, and JD Vance will now represent the White House in New York, while Trump is slated to deliver a speech at the Pentagon.

Adding to the scheduling considerations, The New York Times suggests Trump's departure for Ireland the day after the anniversary to attend the Irish Open golf tournament at his Doonbeg club may have influenced the decision. Departing from airports near New York would cause significant air and road traffic disruptions, unlike departures from the Andrews military base in Maryland, which is standard practice.
