Trump vows 100% tariff on countries imposing digital services tax

Former President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning: any country imposing a digital services tax on U.S. companies will face an immediate 100% tariff on all goods sent to the United States.

In a social media post on Friday, Trump specifically pointed to European nations considering such taxes. He stated, "Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America." He emphasized that this new tariff would supersede any existing trade agreements.

Digital services taxes are designed to target companies that operate in a country and generate revenue there but lack a physical presence, thus avoiding traditional income taxes. According to the Tax Foundation, roughly half of the European members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development have proposed, announced, or already implemented these taxes, which disproportionately affect U.S. companies.

This is not the first time Trump has threatened retaliation over digital taxes. During his first term, the U.S. Trade Representative launched investigations into several European Union countries over their digital tax policies. In August 2025, Trump posted that digital taxes and regulations are intended to weaken American tech companies, declaring, "America, and American Technology Companies, are neither the 'piggy bank' nor the 'doormat' of the World any longer."
