TSMC manager donates $4.8 million NTD for fire truck on Orchid Island

A department manager from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has made a significant donation to enhance rescue capabilities on Orchid Island, a remote Taiwanese island. Zhang Zhaofan, a department manager in TSMC's infrastructure maintenance division, was inspired to act after a visit to the island last September, where he observed the critical need for better emergency response resources.

Zhang initially intended to donate an ambulance, recognizing the challenges of emergency medical transport for island residents. However, upon further discussion with the Taitung County Fire Bureau, it became clear that a small, agile fire truck was a more pressing need for Orchid Island. The island's narrow village lanes and rugged terrain often make it difficult for larger fire engines to navigate.

Understanding the urgency, Zhang generously increased his commitment, bringing the total donation to approximately $4.8 million NTD (New Taiwan Dollars) to fund the specialized fire truck. This contribution comes at a critical time, as Orchid Island has recently experienced multiple fires, stretching the local fire department's resources thin. The new vehicle's maneuverability is expected to significantly improve response times and safety for firefighters.

During the donation ceremony, Taitung County Magistrate Rao Qingling expressed profound gratitude for Zhang's generosity and commitment to social welfare. The donation is seen as a vital boost to the island's safety infrastructure, providing a much-needed resource that will help protect the community and its environment.
