Tuchel regrets nothing despite World Cup semifinal loss to Argentina

England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed no regrets over his ultradefensive strategy despite his team's 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semifinals. "I have no regrets," Tuchel stated after England squandered a 55th-minute lead given by Anthony Gordon at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

"We were so close... But we couldn't maintain the level after scoring," he admitted. After Gordon's opening goal, England was largely pinned back, with Tuchel's only response being to introduce three defenders. Argentina's persistent pressure eventually paid off with goals from Enzo Fernández in the 85th minute and Lautaro Martínez in the 90+2nd minute.

Tuchel explained his tactical thinking, saying, "Of course we wanted to go for the second goal, but I didn't feel that offensive changes would help." He noted that despite maintaining a 4-4-2 formation, the team became increasingly passive, struggling to win or retain possession. "We didn't change anything after the goal, but the game changed completely," he observed.

"We switched to a back five to close down spaces inside and be strong in the air, because right after our goal, without making changes, we conceded too many crosses and too many chances," Tuchel added, attempting to deflect criticism. "But it's okay, I understand there are discussions out there and, of course, there are millions of coaches after the game who think they know better." He ultimately accepted the responsibility, stating, "Of course the responsibility is the coach's." He concluded by saying, "We played one of our best games, perhaps the best, given the circumstances. The team was up to par, but we couldn't finish the job."
