Tunisia Fires Coach Sabri Lamouchi After World Cup Loss, Appoints Hervé Renard

Tunisia has sacked head coach Sabri Lamouchi just days after their heavy 5-1 loss to Sweden in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. The Tunisian Football Federation announced on Monday that French coach Hervé Renard will take over the team for the remainder of the tournament. The decision comes after a disappointing performance that left the Eagles of Carthage with a significant deficit early in the competition. Moez Nassari, president of the Tunisian Football Federation, confirmed the agreement with Renard, stating he will lead the national team until the end of the World Cup. Renard is expected to arrive in Monterrey on Tuesday to conduct his first training session with the squad, which is based in Mexico for the duration of the tournament. Lamouchi, who had been in charge since January, and the federation mutually agreed to terminate his contract. His tenure was cut short following the team's crushing defeat. This marks not the first instance of a coach being dismissed during a World Cup. Notably, Henryk Kasperczak was also fired while coaching Tunisia in 1998 after two group stage losses. Other coaches dismissed mid-tournament include Cha Bum-kun for South Korea and Carlos Alberto Parreira for Saudi Arabia during the same 1998 World Cup held in France.
