Tunisia: Riverbed Clearing Aims to Reduce Flood Risk

Tunisian authorities are undertaking extensive operations to clear the Oued El Halouf riverbed, removing waste, enclosures, and other obstructions. Governor Sofien Tanfouri inspected the progress of these dredging efforts, which are part of a regional environmental governance plan.

Tanfouri stressed the urgency of continuous dredging and cleaning, particularly in areas prone to water accumulation that could lead to disaster. The primary goal is to prevent flooding, safeguard residents, and protect both public and private property. Each cubic meter of waste removed from the riverbed signifies a reduced risk for inhabitants in the surrounding neighborhoods.
