Tunisia's summer road safety described as 'catastrophic'

Tunisia experienced a "catastrophic" summer season marked by a significant rise in fatal road accidents, according to Afef Ben Ghenia, president of the Association of Road Safety Ambassadors. She highlighted that the number of road deaths has reached 800 since the beginning of the year.

Ben Ghenia emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of the mandatory 30 km/h speed limit in school zones, a measure introduced in June 2023. While speed limit signs have been installed, she stressed that additional safety measures like barriers and speed bumps are necessary in certain areas, following traffic assessments.

Parents are also urged to play a crucial role in accident prevention by teaching children safe pedestrian practices. The association plans to intensify awareness campaigns and controls, particularly during the back-to-school period, in collaboration with traffic police.

A particularly alarming trend noted by Ben Ghenia is the increase in fatalities despite a potential decrease in the overall number of accidents. She pointed out that 50% of the victims are young people, underscoring the severity of the issue. The economic cost of these accidents is also substantial, adding another layer to the ongoing road safety crisis in Tunisia.
