Tunisia's X20 radial road project nearing completion, minister says

Tunisia's Minister of Equipment and Housing, Slah Zouari, has indicated that the X20 radial road project is in its final phase and could open to traffic sooner than the initially projected end of 2026. Significant progress has been made, particularly in the Manouba governorate, with remaining work concentrated in the Ariana governorate.

A large part of the project has already been completed, especially in the governorate of Manouba, while the final works are continuing at the level of the governorate of Ariana.

Zouari highlighted the strategic importance of the X20, describing it as the second radial axis for the capital, following the second ring road. Its operationalization is expected to significantly improve traffic organization in Greater Tunis, alleviating pressure on currently saturated main routes. This new infrastructure aims to enhance travel fluidity between peripheral areas of the capital and offer a vital alternative for commuters facing daily traffic challenges.

Its exploitation should contribute to better organization of traffic in Greater Tunis and reduce the pressure on the main roads currently saturated.

Beyond the X20, the Ministry of Equipment and Housing is actively supervising the construction of approximately 25 bridges and interchanges across the country. These projects are part of a broader national strategy to modernize road infrastructure, enhance travel safety, and improve traffic flow.

This new infrastructure is called to improve the fluidity of travel between several peripheral areas of the capital and to offer an additional alternative to users facing daily traffic difficulties.

However, not all projects are proceeding without issue. The minister mentioned difficulties with a company responsible for the Oued Medjerda bridge project. While an additional deadline has been granted to the contractor to catch up on delays, Zouari warned that legal measures, including contract termination, could be taken if contractual obligations are not met. The ultimate goal remains the timely completion and operationalization of all infrastructure projects for the benefit of citizens.

The ministry is currently supervising the realization of about 25 bridges and interchanges across different regions of the country.
