Tunisia: STEG announces potential rolling power outages in Greater Tunis due to heatwave

Tunisia's national electricity provider, STEG, warned of possible rolling power outages across Greater Tunis on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. The company cited the current intense heatwave and the resulting high demand on the electrical grid as the reason for the potential disruptions. These temporary interruptions could occur intermittently between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. in several neighborhoods, including El Menzah, El Manar, Aïn Zaghouan, Les Jardins de Carthage, El Kram, La Goulette, El Bardo, La Manouba, Borj Touil, Sidi Thabet, and Tebourba.

STEG emphasized that power restoration might happen without prior notice and urged citizens to take necessary preventive measures. The company also noted that the list of affected areas is not final and could expand depending on the situation's evolution. The announcement comes as Tunisia experiences a significant heatwave. The National Institute of Meteorology (INM) issued a high vigilance alert for 20 out of 24 governorates on Tuesday. The extreme heat, accompanied by the sirocco wind, is driving a substantial increase in national electricity consumption.
