Tunisian companies honored for road safety commitment

The Société Tunisienne de l’Électricité et du Gaz (STEG), along with the Société Tunisie Autoroutes and the Regional Transport Company of Bizerte, has been honored with the "Most Committed Company for Road Safety" award. This distinction was presented during a ceremony at the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Tunis, as part of the national road safety strategy implementation.

During the same event, the Société de Promotion du Lac de Tunis (SPLT) received the Corporate Social Responsibility award for its efforts in fostering a prevention culture within professional environments. The ceremony was attended by key figures, including the chief of staff for the Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mines, Afef Chachi Tayari, and the president of the Arab Road Safety Union, Lina Shabib.

Lina Shabib emphasized the critical need for action against the escalating human and socioeconomic toll of road accidents. She cited the 2023 WHO report, noting that the Eastern Mediterranean region accounts for approximately 11% of global road traffic deaths, equating to about 16 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants. Given that a significant number of these tragedies occur during commutes, businesses are increasingly seen as vital partners in prevention efforts.

The event concluded with the signing of several strategic agreements. The Tunisia Road Safety Association partnered with national companies to enhance employee training programs. Additionally, the Arab Road Safety Union and the Arab Union of Youth Hostel Associations signed a convention to launch joint awareness initiatives, with a particular focus on engaging young people.
