Turkey: Buca Municipality Raided in Corruption Probe; 54 Detained, 51 Face Arrest Warrants

Authorities in Izmir, Turkey, have launched a sweeping corruption operation targeting the Buca Municipality and its affiliated units. The investigation, spearheaded by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and conducted by the Provincial Police Department's Financial Crimes Branch, has resulted in the detention of 54 individuals.

The operation, which extended to six provinces centered in Izmir, saw the arrest of key figures including the current Buca Mayor Görkem Duman and former Mayor Erhan Kılıç. Also detained were deputy mayors, the former CHP District Chairman Çağdaş Kaya, executives and employees of municipal subsidiaries, and several company owners and contractors.

Following legal proceedings at the police station, the 54 suspects were transferred to the courthouse. The Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has requested the court to issue arrest warrants for 51 of the suspects. The remaining three suspects have been referred to the Judgeship of Peace with a request for judicial control measures, indicating conditional release.

The investigation into alleged corruption within the Buca Municipality is ongoing, with prosecutors seeking to secure the detention of the majority of those apprehended. The scope of the operation highlights significant alleged irregularities within the local administration and associated businesses.
