Turkey: Karbala commemoration calls for brotherhood and solidarity

In Ankara, Turkey, a "Yas-ı Matem Kardeşlik Lokması" (Brotherhood Meal of Mourning) program was organized to commemorate the martyrs of Karbala during the month of Muharram. The event, held at Ege Millet Bahçesi in Mamak, saw significant participation from various cultural associations, including the Ankara Divriği Culture Association, Anadolu Kangal Associations Federation (ANKADEF), and Ankara Sivas İmranlı Associations Federation (ASİMDEF).

The program began with prayers led by Alevi elder Hakan Erol, followed by a semah performance by the Pir Sultan Mamak Semah Group. Artists also performed traditional deyiş and türkü songs, contributing to the spiritual atmosphere of Muharrem. Mamak Mayor Veli Gündüz Şahin, along with other local officials and community leaders, attended the event, underscoring its communal significance.

Aydoğan highlighted that people from different districts and villages share common cultural values and stressed the need to strengthen brotherhood over divisive rhetoric.

The commemoration continued with semah performances and music throughout the day, concluding with the distribution of aşure, a traditional pudding. The event consistently emphasized the importance of preserving the values of sharing, tolerance, and solidarity associated with Muharrem.
