Turkey May Transfer 12 M270 Rocket Systems and Thousands of Rockets to Ukraine

Ukraine's long-range rocket artillery may soon receive substantial reinforcement, with Turkey reportedly preparing to transfer 12 US-made M270 multiple rocket systems (MLRS) and 2,524 M26 rockets to the war-torn nation. The notification, published in the U.S. Congressional Record, indicates that the transfer is contingent upon completing U.S. export control and congressional notification procedures, as the weapons are of American origin.

This potential military aid package is notable not only for the over 2,500 rockets but also for the significant number of M270 systems. If finalized, it would represent one of the largest single transfers of M270 variants to Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. The M270 shares modular ammunition capabilities with Ukraine's widely used M142 HIMARS but features a tracked chassis for enhanced off-road mobility and a larger ammunition capacity, potentially carrying twice the payload of HIMARS.

This increased capacity and mobility allow M270 units to operate from dispersed positions, employing "shoot-and-run" tactics to reduce the risk of detection and counter-battery fire from Russian drones and artillery. The M26 rockets included in the transfer are unguided and utilize dual-purpose improved conventional munitions (DPICM) submunitions, primarily for area targets. This contrasts with the precision-guided GMLRS rockets used by HIMARS and other M270s, allowing Ukraine to conserve its more valuable guided munitions for high-value targets like command posts and logistics hubs.

Ukraine already possesses considerable experience operating M270 systems, with previous contributions from the UK, Germany, France, Norway, and Italy. The addition of 12 M270s from Turkey would not require establishing new operational or logistical frameworks, enabling Ukraine to directly enhance its existing rocket artillery forces. The increased number of launchers would also permit greater dispersal of units, maintaining combat readiness even if some vehicles are undergoing resupply, maintenance, or are lost in combat. This is particularly crucial given Russia's integrated approach to targeting Ukrainian artillery using drones, electronic reconnaissance, and long-range weapons.
