Turkey's leading composers and virtuosos meet in North Aegean for composition camp

Agora Art Village in Çanakkale's Ezine district is hosting its second annual Agora Composition Camp, a visionary project aimed at shaping the future of music literature. The camp, which began on August 3 and runs until August 9, transforms the master-apprentice tradition into a living, breathing laboratory for young composers.

This year's camp saw a significant increase in interest, with 45 young composers applying, compared to 23 last year. After a rigorous selection process, 18 promising composers were accepted to participate in a week of intensive creation and learning. They are working closely with five renowned Turkish composers: Oğuzhan Balcı, Evrim Demirel, Turgay Erdener, Tolga Taviş, and Hasan Uçarsu. Maestro Tolga Taviş is coordinating the camp.

The program includes composition classes, one-on-one mentorship, score analysis, and evening seminars. Throughout the week, the young composers refine their works under the guidance of their mentors, with the pieces quickly moving from paper to performance. The Camerata Agora Ensemble, featuring prominent Turkish virtuosos, will perform the new chamber music compositions created during the camp.

The initiative is bolstered by institutional collaborations and scholarship support. The Sevda-Cenap And Music Foundation is sponsoring the artistic performance, supporting the recording and broadcast of the works by the Camerata Agora Ensemble (flute, violin, cello, piano, harp). Additionally, the Bursa Philharmonic Association is providing scholarships for two young composers.

The camp culminates on August 9 with a final concert at the Agora Art Stage, where the chamber music pieces, approved by mentors, will be performed live by the Camerata Agora Ensemble. These performances will be professionally recorded and made available on digital platforms and the Sevda-Cenap And Music Foundation's channels, serving as lasting documents in Turkey's music literature.
