Turkey's Supreme Military Council to Convene August 4

Turkey's Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) is scheduled to convene on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, under the chairmanship of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The high-level meeting, to be held at the Presidential Complex in Beştepe, will focus on crucial personnel decisions within the Turkish Armed Forces.

Prior to the main session, members of the YAŞ will pay a visit to Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic. Following this traditional observance, the council will proceed to Beştepe to deliberate on key agenda items concerning the strategic planning of military personnel.

This year's YAŞ meeting will see the participation of three new members: Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek, Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi, and Land Forces Commander General Metin Tokel. Their presence marks a significant shift in the council's composition and reflects the evolving dynamics of military and governmental oversight.

The primary agenda items for the YAŞ meeting include the evaluation of personnel dossiers for officers seeking promotion from colonel to general and admiral ranks. Decisions regarding the promotions of generals and admirals to higher ranks will be discussed, alongside the identification of personnel to be retired due to a lack of positions or reaching the age limit. Furthermore, the council will review files pertaining to the extension of service terms for generals, admirals, and colonels. Any potential changes in assignments within the force commands will also be considered. All decisions made during the council's deliberations will be submitted to the President for approval, in accordance with relevant legislation.
