Turkish Olympic Committee signs zero waste protocol with foundation

The Turkish National Olympic Committee (TMOK) has partnered with the Zero Waste Foundation to embed a zero-waste philosophy throughout the nation's sports sector. This collaboration, formalized through a signed protocol, aims to extend the principles of waste reduction and recycling beyond environmental circles and into the heart of athletic life.

Samed Ağırbaş, President of the Zero Waste Foundation and High-Level Climate Champion for COP31, highlighted the protocol as a significant stride in utilizing sports' broad appeal to disseminate the zero-waste message. He credited Emine Erdoğan's leadership for the movement's strong foundation in Turkey and its global expansion, emphasizing the responsibility to bring this vision to all segments of society.

TMOK President Prof. Dr. Veli Ozan Çakır underscored sports' profound influence on public behavior, particularly among young people. He stated that the committee's goal extends beyond athletic achievement to cultivating exemplary citizens. Çakır expressed pride in the prospect of athletes becoming more conscious of environmental issues and serving as role models for future generations, an outcome he values as highly as sporting victories.

The protocol outlines joint efforts to institutionalize and socialize the zero-waste culture. This includes implementing waste segregation at the source in sports facilities like the Olympic House, enhancing recycling, promoting efficient resource use, and minimizing waste. Communication campaigns and awareness initiatives will target national and international sports events, camps, and organizations to foster sustainable consumption habits and environmental consciousness. The Zero Waste Foundation will collaborate with TMOK on educational programs and awareness activities for athletes, coaches, administrators, and the wider public.
