Turkish opposition proposes doubling education prep allowance

A legislative proposal has been put forth by Suat Özçağdaş, a Member of Parliament for the YENİ Party, aiming to significantly boost the preparation allowance for the upcoming school year. The current proposal targets the 2026 school year, suggesting the allowance be raised from the planned 8,599 lira to an amount equivalent to a full month's salary.

Furthermore, Özçağdaş seeks to broaden the scope of this allowance, advocating for its extension to encompass all education employees working within the Ministry of National Education (MEB). This move aims to ensure that a wider range of educational staff benefit from the increased financial support.

Özçağdaş criticized the current allowance level, stating that it falls short of meeting the basic needs of education workers, especially in light of escalating living costs. He argued that the increasing expenses associated with preparing for the new academic year are growing each year. "The current allowance does not align with the economic reality faced by education workers," Özçağdaş asserted.

The MP also voiced concern that the ministry's focus on uniform regulations distracts from addressing the fundamental challenges faced by teachers.
