Turkish Police Arrest Suspects in Cyber Extortion Case Targeting Families

Turkish cybercrime police have dismantled a network that allegedly engaged in cyberbullying, blackmail, and harassment through closed online groups. Operating under coded names such as 'C47' and 'C99,' the group used illicit interrogation panels to target individuals and their families. The investigation, led by the Diyarbakır Cybercrime Branch Directorate, identified suspects who were extorting and threatening families of individuals whose deaths were deemed suspicious.

Among the targets were the families of Rojin Kabaiş, Hiranur Nilgün Aygar, and Kıvanç Uman. The suspects allegedly used foreign phone numbers and illegal panel connections to carry out their threats and blackmail. A coordinated operation across eight provinces, centered in Diyarbakır, led to the arrest of 10 suspects.

Following legal proceedings, two of the 10 suspects were arrested. Subsequently, Nizamettin Kabaiş, the father of Rojin Kabaiş, reported receiving further threats via WhatsApp and BİP, including a photograph of a firearm. The messages warned him to withdraw his complaint, stating, "If you don't withdraw your complaint, you will go next to your daughter, and what happens to you will happen to you." The messages also threatened to shoot up his house.

Kabaiş stated that the threats had been ongoing for months, initially coming from foreign numbers. Despite the escalating threats, including the recent armed warning, Kabaiş expressed his determination not to withdraw his complaint. "I am not afraid of their threats, and I will not abandon my case," he declared, vowing to pursue justice for his daughter until her case is clarified. He has formally filed a complaint with the police, seeking the apprehension and punishment of those responsible.
