Türkiye embassy in Kuwait marks July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day

The Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Kuwait hosted an event on July 16, 2026, to commemorate the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day. The commemoration, originally scheduled earlier but postponed due to a period of mourning in Kuwait, brought together members of the Turkish community, Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, and media personnel.

The ceremony began with a moment of silence and the singing of the national anthem, honoring those who lost their lives during the 2016 coup attempt orchestrated by the Fetullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), as well as all other national martyrs. A recitation from the Holy Qur’an followed, further paying tribute to the fallen.

15 July marked a historic turning point during which the Turkish nation stood firmly in defense of democracy, the national will, and its independence.

In her address, H.E. Tuba Nur Sönmez, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Kuwait, described July 15 as a pivotal moment in Turkish history. She emphasized that the Turkish nation stood united in defense of its democracy, national will, and independence. Ambassador Sönmez lauded the courage and sacrifices of the Turkish people during the coup attempt, characterizing it as a powerful affirmation of Türkiye's commitment to democratic values. She also expressed deep respect and gratitude for the martyrs and appreciation for the nation's veterans.

A video presentation screened during the event depicted the events of the night of July 15, 2016, and showcased the heroic resistance of the Turkish people. To symbolize unity, solidarity, and togetherness, guests were served Ashoura, a traditional Turkish dessert. The ambassador was joined by several dignitaries, including Assistant Foreign Ministers from Kuwait and ambassadors from various diplomatic missions accredited to Kuwait.
