Türkiye summons Ukraine ambassador over Black Sea vessel attacks

Türkiye summoned Ukraine's ambassador to protest attacks in the Black Sea that targeted a Turkish vessel and a second ship sent to assist it. The foreign ministry announced the summons Saturday, stating the incidents occurred on Wednesday and Thursday.

During the meeting, Türkiye emphasized the critical need to guarantee the safety of people, assets, navigation, and the environment in the Black Sea. The Turkish container ship Lider Bordo Mavi was reportedly hit near the Russian coast on Wednesday. The following day, the Lider Kocatepe, a vessel dispatched to tow the damaged ship, also came under attack, according to the ministry.

During the meeting, Türkiye warned about the absolute need to ensure the safety of people, of assets, of navigation and of the environment in the Black Sea.

While the ministry did not report any casualties, local Turkish media indicated the container ship was towed to the Turkish port of Samsun. This incident occurs amid Ankara's ongoing calls for both Ukraine and Russia to cease attacks on civilian shipping. Turkish commercial vessels frequently navigate the Black Sea, and several have previously been targeted by drones suspected to be of Ukrainian origin.

As a NATO member maintaining relations with both Kyiv and Moscow, Türkiye has not imposed sanctions on Russia. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan previously urged a "moratorium" on Black Sea attacks, lamenting that "they are attacking all commercial shipping without distinction."
