Two arrested in Dhaka for attacking doctors, extortion plots

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested two individuals suspected of involvement in recent attacks on doctors, identifying them as Sunny Saha, 38, and Fatin Israq Labib, 20. The arrests follow a series of incidents targeting medical professionals in Dhaka.

The arrestees were identified as Sunny Saha, 38, and Fatin Israq Labib, 20.

According to a press release, Sunny Saha was apprehended in the Goalpara area, while Fatin Israq Labib was arrested in Nikunja. Police stated that the arrested individuals targeted wealthy individuals and plotted extortion schemes. Sunny Saha reportedly admitted to collecting personal information on affluent people after losing money in a money-laundering scheme.

Sunny admitted to previously working in Singapore and later becoming involved in criminal activities after losing money in a money-laundering scheme. He allegedly collected personal information on wealthy individuals.

The investigation stems from attacks on two doctors. On July 27, Prof Dr AKM Aminul Haque was intercepted and threatened in Dhanmondi. Later, on August 17, Prof Dr Md Asadur Rahman was assaulted in front of Popular Diagnostic Centre, Shantinagar, sustaining severe injuries to his right eye. Dr Asadur later filed a complaint stating that an unknown caller had demanded $15,000 in extortion money days before the attack.

Sunny tasked Labib with recruiting attackers.

During interrogation, Sunny Saha allegedly tasked Labib with recruiting attackers for the extortion attempts. Labib reportedly recruited five individuals, including Jibon alias Adil, who was apprehended at the scene of Dr Asadur's assault. Two of these recruited individuals, Abu Bakar and Eban, have already been arrested and are in jail. Separate cases under the Arms Act have also been filed against Sunny and Labib.
